The 1988 Volga GAZ 24-10 Is a Hilariously Bad Soviet Russian Car

The Volga GAZ 24-10 is a Soviet car -- and a poorly built, laughably outdated one. Today I'm reviewing the GAZ 24-10, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of a Soviet car that lagged far behind what we had in North America. I'm also going to drive the Volga and show you what it's like on the road.

You joke about the first aid kit but keep in mind that emergency services were few and there were not and still are not emergency departments or even hospitals in most places. If you had a wreck you may be on your own.

GAZ it is abbreviation for Gorkivsky Avtomobilni Zavod (Car company from Gorky city). Gorky is a last name of Soviet writer Maxim Gorky. City was renamed after him in Soviet times and after renamed back to original state - Nizhny Novgorod. Volga - is a biggest river in Europe and Nizhny Novgorod located on same river. 24-10 means that's 24th model and 10 is number of modification. Car itself not that bad and basicly unkillable tank if owner have some skills and time, but criticize Volga for having carburetor in 1988 for American is bad tone - NASCAR get rid of carburetors only in 2012 and various automakers build cars with carburetor engines thru 90th, like Ford, Mazda, Toyota and others.

The only problem with the volga is that in USSR terms it was "marketed" as a "higher end" car and there was a shortage of car production in the USSR in general because the military was the top priority for soviet manufacturing not civilian goods. The volga would not have been a terrible car for the era if they could have mass produced it in greater numbers You should look at trucks from the 1980s. Utilitarian and ancient but tons of them are still around because theyre simple and cheap to keep running.

Most 20th century European cars had kind of dimmer in the rear view mirror with a tilting mirror behind a semi transparent stationary mirror. I prefer being able to toggle my mirror to my preferred setting, which option all my cars with self dimming mirrors seem to lack. One of many manual features of yester year I miss as the automatic bells and whistles keep engaging unnecessarily and not engaging when needed to. Won't be long till your car takes you where it has decided you need to end up to. "I'm sorry, Dave. I can't let you take the fast lane..."

I am from former USSR and I can tell, that to my opinion, in 1970, when its prototype, GAZ-24 "Volga" first came to Soviet market, it looked much more modern, than American cars of that time. This car was always a very desirable for Soviet consumer and cost a lot of money. In 1970 it was 9100 rubles, when average monthly salaries of Soviet labor workers was around 250 rubles, and Soviet engineers, medical doctors, lawyers and scientists was earning around 120-150 rubles per month (historically, soviet working class people was making twice as much, as educated people). In spite of such a high price, to buy GAZ-24, you had to wait in waiting list for 5 to 10 years. When it was your turn, dealership send you a letter with date, when you have to arrive with cash. And nobody guaranty you, that the cost of your car is the same, as it was 10 years ago. For example, in 1981, suddenly, just overnight, price of GAZ-24 went up from 9100 rubles to 15000. And this car still was in huge demand.

About seatbelts: I don't know exactly about Russia, but in Czechoslovakia, there was a law that required you to strap yourselves in if the vehicle had seatbelts in the back. However, those that were "more equal than others" didn't like to be strapped in, presumably believing that their party membership will save them from death in a car accident. So they ordered their limousines (Tatra T613) without seatbelts on the back seats, despite the car being designed to have them. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same with Gaz 24.

You did not bother to research this car, just clowning around while rolling in your ignorance... If there is anything funny in this video - it's you Doug. A few examples: Volga was designed to ferry around minor officials, so back seat offers ample room, because this is where you place this kind of cargo; in this role Volga usually came with a driver, whose comfort was not a priority. Seat belts in the rear would be useless, because minor officials felt too important to use them. Did you notice that the 'cloth strip' used to 'secure' front hood is made of metal? This is because it is an electrical connection, installed to prevent electrolytic corrosion; it works quite well. The engine of Volga is identical to the one used in UAZ military jeep, it is also backward compatible with all Russian military jeeps made since the 1950's; how is that for functionality? Volga production line at GAZ could be switched to light military vehicles in a few days without retooling, this requirement dictated many features of Volga. The medkit included with every car was very useful, if you want to know why - look at the map of Russia. The place is huge. Once you are past Moscow, driving towards Ural and beyond - there are few cities, there is nothing between them, and the distances are epic; you want to be able to treat a major infection, food poisoning, a wound - and still drive yourself for many hours to the nearest doctor. Beside the medkit every Volga came with a very good toolkit - for the same reason. Blanks for additional switches were very useful too, there were many useful aftermarket options available: the most common fog lamps and rear window defroster - both required extra switches to function. Many Volgas served as police vehicles and taxis, again - extra switches required. Comparison of Volga to western luxury sedans makes no sense, Volga was an utilitarian sedan, adequate for it's intended function; if you want Russian luxury from the same era - try ГАЗ-14 Чайка.

This guy is just absolutely exhausting. I can't imagine having to spend any time in his company... I would eat all those pills from the first aid kit and hope that they knock me out or at least actually make him funny. There's a reason he's using a static camera stand for recording his videos -- no one can stand him long enough and even if he ever had a camera person then they probably jumped in front of the first car he test drove. Never again. Bloahh.

For decades, this used to be the most luxurious car that an average Soviet citizen could realistically aspire to own. You had to file for the permit to buy a Volga GAZ-24 new, and wait for several years for the Party to allow you to buy one. If you didn't want to wait for several years, you could pay the double price to buy a used one. There was also a station wagon which was even harder to get. A country-wide popular actor and circus clown Yuri Nikulin used his superstardom and social status to get the permit to buy a Volga GAZ-21 station wagon, they only let him buy one because he persuaded the Party that he really needed a roomy car for his circus equipment. Otherwise, he would have never got one.

the black pills are Activated carbon to fight poisonings or alcohol overdoses. The brown liquid is iodine, there must have been also a green liquid which is Brilliant green (zelyonka, zelenka) - traditional in Russia for the case of wounds. The car has classic design and some features that were truly considered luxury. It used to be incredibly cool to own it.

13:32 I can't read the other bottles, but the first one is iodine which is what you used in the USSR instead of hydrogen peroxide to treat small open wounds 14:10 the black pills are activated charcoal which is what you use to decrease the acidity of your stomach to keep yourself from throwing up if you got sick Basically it's for if you get in a really bad car accident so that you can provide first aid. Cars like this were built to survive in remote regions first and have things like proper cup holders second; they had simple "outdated" tech that had reliable, simple ways of fixing it so that if you broke down up north somewhere you could fix the car yourself. The design of this car uses a completely different ideology from what was used to design the Lexus mentioned earlier in the video

These were the go to taxi cars in East Berlin during the 70ies and 80ies. Kinda reliable and simple. Back then the mindset was: less stuff equals less points of failure.Treating this as an 1988 model doesn't really do it justice, as it is clearly an older design that they just kept building.
