The 1991 Honda Civic Si -- the "EF" Civic Hatchback -- is a special car that was an early example of a hot hatchback. Today I'm reviewing the Civic Si, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of the EF Civic Si hatchback. I'm also going to drive the Si and show you what it's like on the road.

Doug, you're missing the boat on late 80's passive restraint requirements. There is a reason for the door mounted belts. Cars of this era needed one of 3 things, airbag, motorized belts or door mounted belts that were designed to always be latched. You could leave the belts latched and still get in and out of the car. That's the reason for the 'emergency release' sticker..the buckle was technically the emergency release as the belts were supposed to stay latched at all times. Many cars of this era had door mounted belts.

I own one pre-facelift (1989) for like four years now. I bought it shortly after I turned 22 and after going through ownership of 19 different cars, this is the only one I managed to keep and I think I´ll keep until I die or until I get into an accident. It has so much spirit, manual steering and poor engine noise reduction, which in the combination with the super easy to rev engine does a great job on it. The only thing done to it was swapping OEM cooler (after the plastic liuqid container cracked) with a full aluminium Mishimoto one.

I saw a blue ef that was cherry and bone stock by my house last year. I was debating if I should ask to buy it just because I haven’t seen one that nice and stock in a long time. Sadly, a few months ago I saw it and it was all banged up with major dents and body damage everywhere. What a shame. I own a Fiesta ST so you’re right when you say the Fiesta is the closest thing to a raw Hot Hatch experience.

I LOVED my Civic of that 'era'!! That is a 19 year old car. It looks better than most 3 year old GM's! And it isn't falling apart or has faded paint. All that 'simple' stuff, bare minimum you bitch about is called being practical. Light weight, for less weight to pull around. And all that power crap was/is un-needed. Simple crank windows, manual mirrors, manual seats, LOTS OF GLASS! Yea, you could see out of the car easily, unlike today. No super thick A,B,C pillars stuffed with 20 freaking airbags! Didn't need 10 cameras and sensors to help you back up! You had to know how to turn your head and look! Doug, you are a total idiot. These older Civics like this were fun to drive, & with an actual manual trans., RELIABLE, easy to fix cars. They did carry a lot. With the rear seats down you can carry 2X4's. A simple key to open that hatch, no $400 FOB. Shocking!! This is why these are in demand. And command a lot of money, IF some stupid 18yo has not ruined it by trying to make it scrape the road, and sound like a Lamborghini. CAFE has ruined 'modern cars'.

The seatbelt was mounted on the door as a US-mandated passive restraint measure for cars without an airbag. It had nothing to do with ease of access, as the same car in other markets had the seatbelt on the b-pillar in it's usual location.

The US sold Civics at the time we're equipped with these door mounted belts, but for the Canadian sold units, they are located in the B-pillar. I think it maybe due to regulations in Canada that doesn't allow them to sell door mounted belts there. Motorized shoulder belts are the same, it's more common to see them in the US sold models but for the Canadian sold models it's often the standard 3-point seatbelts.

The reason for the driver side vent, is that it brought in outside air directly from the outside, not via the car’s HVAC system, which even though the heat may be off, the air coming through the other vents picks up engine heat and is simply not fresh and cool like you get with the window rolled down. That driver’s vent is the closest you could get to the old style front vent windows that disappeared in the 80’s. I love cold air on my face when the heat is on everywhere else, so my cars that featured this were my favorites.

I have an 05 civic si. Super hard to find in good condition too. Everything you said about it being special because it hasn’t been modified is exactly how I feel about mine! Everything on mine is stock and I get compliments on it all the time. I am kind of obsessed with it to the point where I want to just garage it and leave it alone now because it’s becoming extinct and more and more rare LOL. And yes, when I drive mine it’s hard to explain but it really does feel like you are part of the car because there’s not really that much car around you

Just an FYI, Canadian cars had the seatbelt mounted on the B-pillar. Reason US cars had this, was the seatbelt laws of the late 80s and early 90s in US mandeted a system where the seatbelt was buckled all the time and driver could enter/exit without releasing it. Most other cars had the automated systems where the upper portion of the seatbelt would ride a rail around the door opening etc. Very strange and by mid 90s all of that foolery was done. Canadian cars never required these systems so our cars were "normal". :)

My very first car was an '89 Civic Si. Looked exactly like this, but with a little different color scheme inside. I loved everything about it and it is definitely what sparked my love of cars. Like most of these cars and most teenagers though, I added MASSIVE 16" rims, lowered it (tastefully), and went with stiffer roll bars and sway bars, an intake and exhaust too. I loved everything about this car. Thanks Doug for reviewing it!

The seatbelt was on the door because it was designed to be automatic to comply with regulations at the time. You were supposed to leave it connected to the release and slide in behind it. Those regs went away with the advent of airbags.

You totally missed the seatbelts. The door mounted seatbelts were a "passive" safety system, they were not present in the original 1988 version of the car. As such, Honda intended that the driver was to keep the belt latched at all times. Closing the door put the belt in the proper position. The warning label was there in the rare event that the belt needed to be unbuckled. These stupid systems were implemented at a time when air bags were expensive.

Brian Graff
Brian Graff Ամիս առաջ
I see that somebody else mentioned it, but prior to air bags in the 1992 models, US cars required passive seat belts - in effect, the belts were designed such that they would always be connected and would close around you when you losed the door - some vehicles had the seat belt on a track around the window frame and when you closed the door it would run around the framee. The red stickers were part of this law. Cars in Canada and other countries usually did not have this as this was a US only law... no stickers either. The storage bin on the one passenger seat is because the other side has the fuel filler behind it - so there was no room on the dirver side. Also, the seats and engine were shared with the CRX Si - which I owned. Doug - I do not think you have reviewed the 84-87 CRX or the 88-91 CRX, but it should be top of your list if you can fine nice ones that were not modified.

Nice EF Civic SI. A few notes - Rear seat headrests, electrical windows as well as electrical folding mirrors were only offered with the JDM version. The cubbies on the back were for rear speakers, again, offered only with the JDM versions. Great to see an original EF Civic SI still original. FYI - I am the original owner of a 1991 Civic DX Hatchback, still original as when I took out of the dealer in November 1991. Still have the OEM radio cassette, btu have upgraded with SI parts in the interiors like seats, speedometer with tach, rear speakers, JDM center console and armrest, clock and front spoilers. My daily driver since 1991.

The seatbelts are on the door because they are meant to stay buckled all the time when you get in and out of the car. It was a "passive restraint" required because the car didnt have an airbag. Thats why large read warning labels near the buckles. Also, there is no armrest storage in the back right seat because Thats where the fuel door is.
